Professor Janet Beer took up the post of Vice Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University in 2007.
Prior to this she was Pro-Vice-Chancellor responsible for learning and teaching, students and continuing professional development at Manchester Metropolitan University, and also Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, Law and Social Science.
Professor Beer’s research interests are late nineteenth/early twentieth-century American writing and contemporary Canadian women’s writing. She has been a Special Adviser to the House of Commons Select Committee on Education and Skills and undertook a five-year term of office as a panellist for the Arts and Humanities Research Council. She is a member of the Board of the Higher Education Academy and Chair of its Audit Committee, and is a member of the QAA Steering Group for Benchmarking Academic Standards.
Professor Beer has been an Associate Editor of the Year’s Work in English Studies (OUP) since 1999 and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of American Studies (CUP). In the North West she has been a Patron of the John Rylands Library Appeal, Chair of Governors at Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College and a Governor of Chetham’s School of Music.
