Sir Alan Langlands is the Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England. He is a science graduate of the University of Glasgow. Following a career in the NHS he became Chief Executive of the NHS in England in 1994. He was knighted in 1998 for services to the NHS.
Sir Alan was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee from 2000 to 2009 before joining HEFCE as Chief Executive. Sir Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and has been awarded several honorary fellowships, including by the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the City and Guilds of London Institute, and the Institute of Actuaries. In 2004 he chaired the Independent Commission on Good Governance.
Sir Alan is married with two grown up children; his main home is in Yorkshire.
