HEPI / Times Higher EU referendum essay-writing competition

  • 18 March 2016

At the time of the 2014 referendum on independence for Scotland, HEPI and the Times Higher jointly ran an essay-writing competition looking at the potential impact on higher education. The winning entries were by Hugh Pennington, Emeritus Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Aberdeen, and Thomas Swann, a PhD candidate and graduate teaching assistant at the University of Leicester’s School of Management, and they can be read here. The runners-up appeared on the HEPI website here and here.

We are no joining forces with the Times Higher once more for an essay-writing competition on the UK higher education’s place in the European Union. There will be a £200 prize for the best entry on each side of the argument and a number of the best entries will be published on the THE blog.

The rules are straightforward:

  • the word limit is 1,000 words;
  • the essays must focus on the potential consequences of the referendum for higher education; and
  • the judges, who will be from the Times Higher and HEPI, will come to a view based on the quality of the argument and the quality of the writing.

Please send entries to [email protected] by Monday, 23rd May 2016. We look forward to reading them.
