Universities receive hundreds of millions of pounds each year, and are key to the country’s future success. More than ever is expected of their governing bodies. With the Higher Education and Research Act now on the statute books, is it time to ask whether universities’ governance arrangements are fit for purpose. What sort of people make the best governors? What should the relationship with the university management be like? What lessons are there from other sectors?
The panel will discuss the key attributes of good governance and how to ensure existing governance arrangements are fitting, with speakers:
- Professor Julia Buckingham, Vice-Chancellor and President, Brunel University; former Pro-Rector for Education and Academic Affairs, Imperial College London
- Rob Behrens, Parliamentary and Health Services Ombudsman; former Chief Executive and Independent Adjudicator for the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education and as the Complaints Commissioner for the Bar Standards Board
- Gillian Camm, Chair, Leadership Foundation for Higher Education; former Chair of Governors, University of the West of England
- Professor Andy Westwood, Director of the University of Wolverhampton’s Observatory; and Associate Vice president at the University of Manchester (Chair of the Panel)
