HEPI / RSA roundtable focused on the quality of teaching in the higher education sector, drawing on the experiences from the schools sector
In the schools sector there exists the Education Endowment Foundation which acts as a mediator between the education research community and schools (and which also sponsors its own network of ‘research schools’) to present and expand the ‘what works’ evidence base. The profession is also engaged in a rich debate about the implications of cognitive science for teaching methods.
At the 6th September roundtable, HEPI and the RSA are keen to bring together interested stakeholders to consider why, at a time when education academics are paying an unprecedented amount of attention to ‘what works’ in the teaching of school children, there is – arguably – less attention paid to the question of how best to teach university undergraduates? This is especially topical given the way the Teaching Excellence Framework continues to evolve. We want to create a space where we can challenge current thinking and to consider whether, in the new regulatory landscape for HE, there exists an opportunity to learn more from the world of schools about how to ensure teaching gets the focus it deserves. Is there even a case for a Higher Education Endowment Foundation / Fund to promote innovation and evaluation, and to spread best practice, in university teaching?
