HEPI webinar: ‘What is the future of student fees and funding?’, 28 January 2021

  • 28 January 2021
  • 11:00 - 12:15

***UPDATE*** A recording of the webinar is available here:

More than ten years since the raising of tuition fees was announced in England, the topic of student funding remains hotly debated across the UK. For example, the Westminster Government is still due to respond to the Augar report and higher education funding and student finance could be an issue in the forthcoming elections in Scotland and Wales.

So the first HEPI webinar of 2021 will look at the whole issue of how to fund undergraduate teaching and student support. Coming just a week after the publication of a new HEPI report on the topic, this free webinar will provide an opportunity to consider what the future of student funding should look like and how we can create a system that is both fair and ensures a sustainable higher education system.

With speakers defending the status quo, a new graduate contribution scheme and fee-free education, we expect this to be a lively policy-focused debate.

Confirmed speakers currently include:

  • Jenny Sherrard, Head of Equality and Policy, University and College Union (UCU)
  • Lord David Willetts, former Minister for Universities and Science
  • Kirsty Williams, Minister for Education, Welsh Government
