The challenges facing higher education in 2017 are greater than ever before. There are competitive challenges from abroad, particularly from Asia. The Government is fundamentally changing the regulation of higher education. The UK’s position in the world is changing, underlined by the vote to leave the European Union, and the election of the new US President, which is shifting thinking at home and abroad. How should higher education institutions react? What is the future environment for universities going to look like?

While in the past twenty years the number of students in the UK Universities has experienced a significant increase, the number of academic staff and available funding has not. I suggest that the mismatch can be dealt with by training University teachers to deal with large classes of modern students. I suggest that this can be done by volunteers like me – retired academics with proven record in this area.
