Generative AI has moved from novelty to near universality among UK undergraduates in just a few years, according to a new HEPI survey.

The Student Generative AI Survey 2026 (HEPI Report 199) written by Rose Stephenson and Charlotte Armstrong, and sponsored by Kortext, finds that 95% of students now use AI in some form and 94% use generative AI to support assessed work. Yet the report highlights that this is not the full story: while students are rapidly integrating AI into their learning, many feel their institutions are not keeping pace in providing guidance, tools or structured support.

Based on responses from 1,054 full-time undergraduates, the survey paints a complex and sometimes polarised picture of AI’s impact on the student experience. Many students say AI helps them save time, understand difficult material and focus on deeper analysis. Others worry it could undermine independent thinking, fairness and academic skills. The research also highlights changing assessment practices, growing anxiety about misconduct accusations and the emerging role of AI in supporting student wellbeing.

The report argues universities must move quickly to embed AI literacy into curricula, provide clearer guidance on responsible use and ensure equitable access to appropriate tools. Students overwhelmingly view AI skills as essential for their futures, but fewer than half feel supported by their teaching staff. These findings, therefore, raise urgent questions for institutions.
