While paid work has become an expected part of student life, prospective students remain ambitious about gaining the independence, opportunities and sense of belonging that higher education can provide.

The latest Applicant Index from Unite Students and HEPI reveals just how much expectations of university life have changed. An overwhelming 87% of applicants expect to work during term time, with almost one-third anticipating working more than 16 hours each week. Yet despite growing financial pressures, most still aspire to the traditional university experience, planning to live away from home, develop their independence and immerse themselves in campus life rather than simply commute to study.

The report also uncovers a more nuanced picture of the next generation of students. While applicants remain broadly optimistic about university, confidence has softened across areas such as wellbeing, learning and resilience. Nearly half say greater opportunities to socialise and build connections would improve their experience, while many also highlight the importance of counselling services, wellbeing support and round-the-clock assistance. The findings suggest that students increasingly view support, community and belonging as essential components of a successful university experience.

Drawing on the views of more than 2,000 prospective students, the report provides a valuable snapshot of the expectations, aspirations and concerns shaping the next cohort of undergraduates. From the growing role of paid employment to the continued appeal of independent living and the importance of student support, the findings offer important insights into what today’s applicants want from higher education. To delve deeper into the findings, join HEPI and Unite Students for a free webinar from 11.00am to 12.00pm on Wednesday 24 June. The discussion will bring together an expert panel including Dr Jo Saxton CBE (UCAS), Becca Hayhurst (Unite Students), Tuely Robins (StudentCrowd) and Favour Samuel (Incoming NUS England President), chaired by HEPI’s Charlotte Armstrong.
