As the number of PhD graduates continues to grow, the sector must ensure that they are equipped to thrive wherever their careers take them. A new HEPI report argues that strengthening careers support for doctoral researchers is not just good for graduates, but an investment in the UK’s economy, innovation and future workforce.

More Than Academia: Expanding Career Support for Doctoral Researchers (HEPI Report 204) by Dr Charlotte Fawcett explores how universities can better prepare PhD students for careers both within and beyond academia. The report reveals that while nearly half of doctoral researchers still aspire to academic careers, many feel underprepared for the wider labour market. One-third are dissatisfied with the careers guidance provided by their supervisors, more than a third say their supervisor does not make time for honest career conversations and only 27% believe their supervisor can offer useful advice on careers outside academia. The findings also highlight the persistent perception among some students that leaving academia represents failure, despite the growing contribution of doctorate holders across industry, government and the wider economy.

The report sets out a series of practical recommendations to broaden career support, including dedicated postgraduate careers services, greater access to internships and professional development, improved collaboration between universities and better national tracking of doctoral graduates. It argues that by expanding career horizons and challenging outdated perceptions, universities can help PhD students move confidently into roles where their expertise will deliver the greatest impact.

With demand for highly skilled researchers continuing to grow across a wide range of sectors, the report provides a timely blueprint for how universities, funders and policymakers can better support doctoral talent.
