Are the humanities in crisis?

  • 26 April 2023
  • 18:00 to 19:15
  • Bush House, Strand Campus, London

The Government wants to cement the UK’s place as a ‘science and technology superpower’, while encouraging more people to take degrees in STEM subjects. Given this focus, with insufficient mention of the role that arts and culture can play in the society of tomorrow, are the humanities in crisis? And how valuable is a humanities education today?

In a new HEPI report, Professor Marion Thain and other leaders of humanities disciplines argue that humanities research and education are signally valuable assets to the UK – if fostered and deployed correctly.

At an event at KCL, a panel will discuss the state of the humanities today and how policymakers can make the most of our globally leading sector.

Panel

  • Professor Marion Thain, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, King’s College London
  • Professor Bobby Duffy, Director of the Policy Institute, King’s College London
  • Lord Jo Johnson, former Minister of State for Universities, Science and Innovation
  • Dr Molly Morgan Jones, Director of Policy, British Academy

Other speakers will be announced in due course.
