2020 HEPI / Advance HE Parliamentary Breakfast Seminar: The battle for autonomy – the challenge for the HE sector in a regulated world

  • 25 March 2020
  • 8.30am - 10.15am
  • House of Commons, London

Please note that due to the current Covid-19 crisis, this event had to be cancelled.

On Wednesday 25 March 2020, HEPI and Advance HE host the third seminar in the 2020 series of parliamentary breakfast seminars.

Safeguarding the autonomy of the sector has been a key political battle in recent times across the UK, for example during the passage of Higher Education and Research Act (2017) and the Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Act (2016). The Office for Students secured its full powers in the summer of 2019 and, as its policies around value for money for students, fair access and widening participation have become clearer, how is the relationship between the sector and its regulator developing? Does it further undermine the notion of a single HE sector across the UK? And what should universities themselves be doing – from addressing perceived degree inflation to university admissions – to safeguard their autonomy going forward?

Baroness Valerie Amos, Director, SOAS

Dr Jo Grady, General Secretary, University and College Union
