2021 HEPI University Partners’ Policy Briefing Day, Thursday 6 May

Each year, HEPI organises a day on higher education policy developments exclusively for our HEPI Partner organisations, to provide colleagues in the sector with expert policy advice and guidance from both the HEPI team and a range of guest speakers and an opportunity to discuss the key issues that dominate the HE agenda.

The 2021 HEPI Policy Briefing Day is to be held on Thursday 6 May, via Zoom. Topics to be covered include:

• What will be the key issues for HE through the rest of the 2020s?
• How do we solve the gender inequalities in higher education?
• What should universities do to improve their image?

Timing: 10am – 12.45pm

10am – Introduction by Nick Hillman, HEPI Director

10.05am – HEPI Report Briefing: spotlight on new HEPI reports. Speakers: Rachel Hewitt, HEPI Director of Policy and Advocacy and Michael Natzler, HEPI Policy Officer

10.20am – Questions / discussion

10.30am – Policymaking in the 2020s: how is higher education policy developing now and where are we heading? Speakers: Jonathan Simons, Director and Head of the Education Practice, Public First; Natalie Bennett, Green Party Peer and former leader of the Green Party; and Stephen Bush, Political Editor, New Statesman

11am – Questions / discussion

11.15am – Gender and higher education: how do we tackle gender issues in HE, including the under-representation of young men in HE, the graduate gender pay gap and the under-representation of women as senior leaders in HE? Speakers: Osaro Otobo, Higher Education Consultant, Founder at Make Diversity Count and Deputy Chair of British Youth Council; Bahram Bekhradnia, President, HEPI; and Professor Stephanie Marshall, Vice-Principal (Education), Queen Mary University of London.

11.45am – Questions / discussion

12.00pm – Delivering the message: the public face of universities. Speakers: Rosemary Bennett, former Education Editor, The Times; Lucian Hudson, Director of Advancement and Communications, Durham University; and Chris Parr, Freelance journalist and Assistant editor (HE), Research Professional News.
