***UPDATE: RECORDING NOW AVAILABLE BELOW***
On Thursday, 31 March 2022, HEPI, with support from the University of St Andrews, is publishing a major new paper on the relatively low level of understanding of China in the UK, measured – for example – by the number of school pupils studying Mandarin or the number of undergraduates on Chinese Studies programmes. In short, in recent decades, understanding of China in the UK appears not to have grown anything like in line with the global importance of China.
On the day of publication we are hosting a short webinar to discuss the issues, at which we will hear from Michael Natzler, the author of the report, followed by a panel discussion with leading experts in UK / China relations, including:
- The Rt. Hon. the Lord Johnson, former Minister for Universities and Science and co-author of The China question (King’s College Policy Unit, 2021)
- Steph Harris, Acting Assistant Director, Policy and International Engagement, Universities UK International
- Professor Rana Mitter, Professor of Chinese History and Politics, University of Oxford
- Professor Gregory Lee, Professor of Chinese Studies, University of St Andrews
